August 2, 2020 – The NowDecatur crew head to the Backpack Attack at the Decatur Family YMCA for this week’s Hot25! The Decatur Family YMCA gave out 2000 backpacks to students in our community as part of it’s annual backpack attack. The backpacks, which were supplied with the tools for students in two grade groups starting at K-3, were distributed by a drive through Saturday from 9am to 1pm. Watch the video now! August 1, 2020 – It’s the 7th episode of Speak Up/ Speak Out, a weekly online forum to discuss issues facing OUR community and working towards enacting real change. This week, host Terrence TAT Taylor, talk about the Jerry J. Dawson Civic Leadership Institute as well as efforts to enhance the relationship with law enforcement and minority youth.
This week’s guests are Dr. Juanita Morris, the Program Coordinator for JJDCLI, Sheriff Tony Brown, and Decatur Police Chief Jim Getz.
July 27, 2020 – This week, NowDecatur headed to Warrensburg to check out their Corn Hole Tournament. The tournament was held in place of the 3 day Warrensburg Corn Festival and was planned under the guidance of the Health Department to ensure a safe family event. Check out the video now! July 19, 2020 – The Decatur Police Department is undergoing training this month in de-escalation as part of a program with the Police Executive Research Forum. Law enforcement experts from around the country were brought to Decatur specifically to train officers in ICAT, or Integrating Communications, Assessment, and Tactics. The specialized training is an extremely unique opportunity not available to most law enforcement and is designed especially for situations involving people who may be experiencing mental health or other crisis. The training includes classwork as well as role-played scenarios. The training was made possible thanks to the Howard G Buffett Foundation through the Police Executive Research Forum. July 9th, 2020-In commemoration with the closing of Durfee Technology Magnet School, a time capsule that was buried in 04-05′ on the schools’ ground has been resurrected. Durfee Technology Magnet School Principal Mary Brady and Assistant Principal Kristi Mullinix uncover the memories and documents that were buried 15 years ago. The capsule held a Magnet from the school, staff pictures, school brochures, the school’s oath, and lists of students and faculties names. Check out the full video now.
June 20th, 2020- United Way of Decatur & Mid-Illinois (UWDMI) partnered with Central Illinois Foodbank, The Community Foundation of Macon County, Neuhoff Media, Crossing Healthcare, and Tate & Lyle, too distribute 500 free food boxes to families in the community.
June 18, 2020 – Young Leaders In Action, a youth-led initiative of The Community Foundation of Macon County teamed up with Aldi yesterday to surprise senior citizen shoppers with $50 Gift Cards. Aldi holdsvulnerable and high risk shopping hours for Senior Citizens on Tuesday and Thursday Mornings. YLIA members from 12 local school districts were there to greet them to hand out the cards. The group raised $5000 for the effort and Aldi donated an additional $2500 for the effort. Watch the video now!
