Pints 4 Pints Blood Drive

Pints 4 Pints Blood Drive

July 16, 2020- Due to the Nationwide Blood shortage, the Red Cross and United Way of Decatur & Mid-Illinois are hosting “Pints 4 Pints” blood drive on Monday, July 20th at Door 4 Brewing Co.  Eligible donors can give a pint of blood and receive a customized pint glass from Door 4.Appointments can be made between 11 am and 4 pm.

Donor requirements include being at least 17 years old (16 with parental permission), in good health and weigh at least 110 lbs. The donation process takes about an hour, consisting of a health screening, donating time, and snacks. Individuals can donate whole blood once every 56 days.

“Since COVID restrictions were lifted for elective procedures and patients returned in mass for medical treatments, surgeries have spiked and blood centers across the state are struggling to keep up with the demand for blood.  Making the situation worse is nearly 60% of the collections blood centers rely on coming from offsite blood drives (not from actual donor centers), many of which are not being held due to many sites still being closed, including businesses who have employees working remotely and churches/school/community locations being restricted for external activities.  Unfortunately, many people don’t realize that blood only has a 42-day shelf life, needs to constantly be replenished, and that there is no substitute” said Emily Alanis, Regional Manager of Donor Recruitment for Vertsiti Blood Center of Illinois.

Local stores such as Kroger and Walmart announced that they will begin requiring masks at their locations.
Until now, masks have been encouraged but not required. Walmart and Sams Club will institute the rule starting on July 20th and Kroger’s requirement will kick in on July 22.
The stores join Starbucks, who started requiring masks yesterday, as well as major retailers such as Kohls, Menards, and others.
