September 10, 2020 – With the first case of West Nile virus being confirmed in Illinois on Wednesday, health experts are warning that its symptoms are very similar to COVID-19.  Fever, muscle aches, headaches, dry cough, and nausea are common symptoms of both viruses.  The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 28 human cases of West Nile virus last year but said that many cases go unreported due to many of those infected with West Nile are asymptomatic.  West Nile virus is transmitted by a house mosquito bite after it has fed on an infected bird.

The IDPH suggests making sure windows and doors have proper seals, wearing long pants and sleeves as well as an insect repellent that contains DEET, Picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.  Make sure that there is no sitting water in your area, and report dead birds to the local county health department.
