July, 8, 2020 – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin was in Decatur to meet with local and State Law Enforcement Officials and to promote the Justice in Policing Act of 2020. Durbin said the meeting at the Law Enforcement Training Institute brought meaningful conversation that he hopes will bring meaningful change. The Justice in Policing Act calls for enhanced training, a ban on chokeholds, removal of police immunity from lawsuits, and would establish a misconduct directory. When asked if he believes the bill has a chance in the Senate?
The meeting was organized by State Qualification Board to give law enforcement a chance to discuss their concerns about the act. Durbin added that the movement to “de-fund the police” is not something he is willing to entertain, adding that now is the time for more training.
