Jan 19 – There is a new farm in Decatur but instead of cultivating animals and grain; the owner is churning out art pieces.
The Art Farm, owned by Peggy Baity, showcases the work of both local and Midwest artists. “So I’m kind of bringing art to Decatur and bringing Decatur to the art at the same time,” said Baity. Within her new shop, located at 252 North Park Street in Decatur, she has pieces ranging from murals to dolls to unique lamps and more.
Baity has always wanted to own a shop like The Art Farm. Her love of art drove her to work with art supplies in St. Louis, but then she decided to come back to her hometown of Decatur to show off the local talent with her shop. “There are a lot of artists here from Decatur. People come in and see their stuff that they have never seen before….It makes me feel good that they are seeing stuff that their friends and neighbors made.” Baity had supported local talent before the shop by holding pop-up art markets.
Since she opened the doors on Tuesday, Baity said she has had a lot of support from the community and is excited about their feedback. “I’ve had several people tell me ‘Oh, I use to paint or I used to make such and such. This is so inspiring and makes me what to go buy some fabric or a canvas and create again.’ That’s really my main goal.” She continued to say that she wants to harvest that creativity through different workshops, poetry readings, and even a children’s section to show off “the wares of young entrepreneurs.”
The Art Farm is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you have any questions about The Art Farm please call Peggy Baity at (217) 330-9664.
