October 25 – Akorn Pharmaceutical has announced another major investment in Decatur.
Today the Greater Decatur Chamber of Commerce held a groundbreaking ceremony for Akorn on their 60,000 square foot expansion project that will go towards $25 million into a new lab and pilot plant.
The expansion at their 1222 W. Grand facility is to accommodate Akorn’s growing pharmaceutical development, analytical and microbiology testing laboratories and manufacturing facility that employs 276 employees.
The project is part of a multi-year capital improvement plan that will add local jobs. The expansion also shows Akorn’s commitment to the community says Economic Development Corporation President Ryan McCrady.
“They’re one of our Legacy employers, one of our premier employers, and they have a true commitment to Decatur and Decatur is committed to them,” says McCrady. “We’ve provided them a great workforce and they’ve provided a great place to work and they’re a tremendous partner in our community.”
McCrady says since 2013, and once the project is completed, Akorn will have invested over $75 million in expansion projects in Decatur. He says they contribute to the community in more ways than one.
“When you see all the employees eating at the local restaurants and you see local contractors on site doing the work that economic benefit ripples through the community,” says McCrady.
Akorn is a specialty generic pharmaceutical company engaged in the development, manufacture and marketing of multi-source and branded pharmaceutical products with a worldwide manufacturing footprint.
In February, Akorn announced expansion at their facility on the west side of Decatur that retained 235 jobs and created new employment opportunities.
Akorn Executive Vice President of Global Quality Assurance Mark Silverberg says the expansion is the next step in growth of the company.
“We are fortunate to of faced certain opportunities and challenges with the results of more employees and products,” says Silverberg. “This is the step of evolutionary growth that companies want and that we are enjoying. This will allow us to expand our footprint here.”
Akorn began operations in Decatur in 1992 after purchasing Taylor Pharmacal Company which was founded in Decatur in 1948. Akorn currently has two locations in Decatur and employs over 500 workers involved in pharmaceutical manufacturing, product packaging, research and development, quality assurance and quality compliance.
Silverberg explains why continued expansion in Decatur has become reality.
“This is our home, we have an established skill set with our employees and available technologies and we have a great partnership with local and state officials that are collaborative and supportive of our mission and our ability to achieve our goals,” says Silverberg.
Akorn officials expect the expansion to be complete by early to mid-2018.
