October 14 – You can help out local Special Olympics athletes today by heading to Central Park for the Salute to Our Heroes fundraiser.
Members of the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, Decatur Police Department, and Decatur Fire Department are in Central Park taking donations to help benefit Special Olympics athletes. You can thank first responders and law enforcement for their service and also donate to Special Olympics of Central Illinois.
“Everyone is down here supporting Special Olympics,” Special Olympics Central Area 10 Director Joanie Keys says. “We are taking donations for your favorite law enforcement agency and we’ve got raffle packages available.”
Donations will go to the Knights of Columbus’ annual Tootsie Roll Drive benefiting Special Olympics. Keys says their athletes participate free of charge thanks to generous donations.
“A lot of the money goes directly towards equipment, uniforms, and anything we need to help them participate in competitions,” Keys says. “We also pay for any travel expenses for when the athletes head to district or state competitions.”
Y103 and 95q will be broadcasting live from Central Park today. Some Special Olympians are also in Central Park to visit.
The event runs until 2 p.m. today, with lunch from University Dogs for $6 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. They are serving bratwursts, chips, and drinks from Mueller Distributing.
