October 11 – In the wake of Hurricane Matthew, the American Red Cross is hoping to recruit more volunteers to help with cleanup and response efforts.
Over 3,000 Red Cross volunteers have been dispatched to Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia to help with what is expected to be a long recovery process. In order to get more volunteers to the east coast soon, the Red Cross of Central and Southern Illinois will be hosting a “Hot Shot” training event for new volunteers on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 in Springfield.
“Hot Shot” is a one-day training that will provide new volunteers with the skills needed to be a part of the Hurricane Matthew response. The training will include two online courses that will introduce information about disaster services and care of those who have experienced a natural disaster. You will also learn about how to set up, run and close a shelter during a disaster.
After completing the training, you will be eligible to deploy to help with on the east coast.
Registration is required for the training. To register, you can contact Pam Tish at (217) 428-7758 ext. 7478 or email her at Pam.Tish@redcross.org
