Rep. Davis says focus on mental health, not stricter gun laws

SPRINGFIELD — An Illinois Congressman says more focus needs to be given to mental health rather than adding stricter gun laws.

Rep. Rodney Davis says he’s been wanting a comprehensive discussion on all aspects of gun ownership ever since the Newtown shootings, but believes President Obama didn’t go far enough.

Davis says mental health treatment should be a focus of lawmakers in the wake of last week’s shooting at a movie theatre in Louisiana.

“We need to make sure people that need help get help and any medication they need,” says Davis.  “People should never think its okay to just walk into a theatre and fire on innocent civilians.”

Davis says gun ownership may not be the only problem and adds that he still supports the Second Amendment.  He says he thinks some areas with the strictest gun laws are also some of the areas with the highest crime rates.
