Community activist Stockard-Odeneal dies at 69

DECATUR– Community and anti-violence activist Betsy Stockard-Odeneal passed away over the weekend at the age of 69.


Stockard-Odeneal founded the Stop the Violence marches, and the Youth Empowerment Agency during her time in the community. Stockard-Odeneal was the first African American woman to serve on the Decatur City Council.


Decatur Black Chamber of Commerce President Anthony Walker says the chamber will sponsor a memorial event for Stockard-Odeneal soon.


Funeral arraignments for Stockard-Odeneal are pending.
