Park District, soccer program, gear up to host Midstate Cup

DECATUR– Midstate Soccer Club and the Decatur Park District are preparing to host the largest youth soccer tournament in Central Illinois this weekend.

Over 130 teams, with age ranges between 3rd grade and high school, will make the trek to Decatur to participate in the 3-day tournament.

Midstate Soccer Club director Colin Bonner says this year’s tournament will be the biggest yet, “We started with just about 50 teams six years ago and have grown exponentially since then. We are anticipating 137 teams this year between all the age groups.”

Teams from Indiana, Missouri, Iowa and Illinois will be represented during the tournament, including over 300 players from Macon County. Bonner said they were forced to turn some teams away because they had reached their participation limit.

This year Bonner says they have introduced high schoolers for the first time and have even opened up new locations, “The high school teams are new this year, they had been asked about for a number of years and we were finally able to do it this year and as a result we have opened up our play to include the fields at Millikin University.”

A majority of the games will be played at the Decatur Soccer Complex near Stephen Decatur High School.

The tournament will begin on Friday at 5:45 and games will run through Sunday evening. A complete list of game times and locations can be found at midstatesoccer.com.
