SCAM ALERT: Phone scam identified by sheriff’s office

DECATUR— The Macon County Sheriff’s Office has identified a phone scam circulating Macon County. The following is a press release by the Sheriff’s Department detailing the scam.

Our office and the Decatur Police Department have been receiving several complaints regarding a phone scam involving a person identifying himself as Deputy James Marshall with the Macon Co. Sheriff’s Dept.

The caller is telling the person that they have a warrant out of Macon Co. and they can take care of it over the phone. Most of these calls have been coming from the phone number (217) 219-0650. When we called the number back the guy answered it as if he was the Sheriff’s Office.

THIS CALL IS A SCAM! Our department is currently investigating this case and request residents to not fall for this scam. We will never call you and tell you a warrant can be taken care of over the phone.

If you have fallen victim to this person, please call your local police department to file a complaint.
