Single vehicle crash claims life of 1 in rural Macon County

DECATUR—A 20 year-old Decatur man is dead following a single vehicle accident that occurred early Tuesday morning.

The Macon County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene of the accident shortly after 3:30 a.m. near the intersection of Bearsdale Road and Pershing Road in rural Macon County.

Arriving on the scene, Sgt. Jason Brown and Dep. Shane Wendell discovered the model year 2000 4-door Dodge submerged in a small pond south of the intersection. After an unsuccessful attempt to gain access to the driver of the vehicle, rescue crews from the Harristown Fire Department were called in to gain access to the car.

Upon freeing the driver from the vehicle, the driver was found deceased. The two 19 year-old occupants, from rural Decatur, refused medical treatment at the scene.

Initial investigations indicate the car was traveling southbound on Bearsdale Road, before striking a berm and landing in the pond.

At this point the names of the people involved in the accident are not being released pending further investigation.
