The 2nd Annual Fallen Heroes Tree Lighting Ceremony

November 22nd, 2019- The Decatur Civic Center is partnering with America’s Gold Star Families and the Sgt. Anthony Maddox Memorial to host the 2nd Annual Fallen Heroes Tree Lighting Ceremony this morning at 11am. The ceremony honored all who risked their lives fighting for our Country by hanging handcrafted ornaments on the tree that represent each of our fallen soldiers. The tree is one of three in the central Illinois Area. For more information on the importance of The Tree of Honor visit www.americasgoldstarfamilies.org.

November 16th, 2019 – Over 300 volunteer packed the old Sears building at the Hickory Point Mall to help pack boxes for the Judy Mason Thanksgiving Basket Project. Volunteers helped pack the boxes with canned vegetables and non-perishable items in preparing for the baskets to be delivered the week of Thanksgiving. Decatur resident Nick Walsh brought his family out to volunteer to give back to the community and show his kids the importance of community service.

There will be another volunteer event next Saturday from 9-10am and next Sunday from 3-5pm. You can also help financially by going to feed5for25.com to help cover the cost of the hams that will go into each of the boxes.

October 30th, 2019- Ameren Illinois visited the French STEM Academy to talk to students about National Energy Awareness Month. Students were able to spend time with Ameren employees as they learned about energy conservation as well as electric/natural gas safety. Students were also able to take part in an interactive STEM project where they had to build clocks powered by energy from a pumpkin.

October 21st, 2019- DPS Johns Hill’s Art Club volunteered on Merchant St to create a window mural in our community this weekend. Students were able to show off their artistic talent with a spooky Halloween inspired mural. The Mural is located in the window of Del’s Popcorn Shop. A special thanks to the Decatur Area Arts Council, Illinois Arts Council, Gallery 510/Illinois Art Gallery for grants to support this project.
