Yborra to Run for Macon County Circuit Clerk

August 15th, 2019. Jennifer Yborra has announced her candidacy for the office of Macon County Circuit Clerk. A native of Decatur, Yborra has worked in the clerk’s office for the last 6 years and brings over 14 years of small business ownership and management to the position.

“My goals are to bring fresh innovative ideas along with positive solutions to the voters of Macon County.” said Yborra.

“My previous experience as a business owner, as well as my current position in the circuit clerk office, has provided me with an increased knowledge base and understanding of the needs and expectations of our voters. I understand the complexities of government, including its capabilities and limitations.”

Yborra joins Sharon Doty in running for the office of Macon County Circuit Clerk.

August 13th, 2019 – Local attorney Gary Geisler hosted an event at the Decatur Public Library called “Woodstock.” Geisler, who has been practicing law since 1977, Became interested in the event as it celebrates the 50th anniversary, created a movie called “Missing Woodstock” that he showed to the public. Geisler has done several events at the library and is a volunteer in the Local History Room. August 9th, 2019 – Part of our #HOT25, the First Friday Gallery Walk is a free event that spotlights the downtown art community. This month’s walk featured 4 different stops with different exhibits and the artists that created them. The Decatur Area Arts Council featured works by Thom Walen and music by Doug Nicholson. Blue Connection’s  exhibit, titled “Smaller than a Breadbox” featured small art with a big impact by local and national artists. Gallery 510 featured works by Brenda Bunch and ArtFarm displayed art by Casey Wilen.

August 8th, 2019 – Dr. Pam Lindsey, associate professor and director of the School of Nursing at Millikin University, has been named the interim dean of the College of Professional Studies (CPS), effective Aug. 1, 2019. Dr. Lindsey succeeds Dr. Deborah Slayton, who served as dean of the College of Professional Studies from 2010 until her retirement on July 31, 2019. “It is an honor and privilege to serve as the interim dean of the College of Professional Studies,” said Dr. Lindsey. “As director of the School of Nursing the past five years, I was fortunate to work under the tutelage of Dr. Deborah Slayton. She provided excellent leadership and countless contributions to the University and the College of Professional Studies. It is humbling to follow in her footsteps. I am blessed with a strong leadership team in CPS and look forward to the coming year with excitement and great anticipation of what we can accomplish to further the mission and vision of Millikin University.”

Hunter Wingshooting Clinic Scheduled at Decatur Gun Club

August 7th, 2019 – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), the Illinois Conservation Foundation and the Decatur Gun Club are sponsoring a wingshooting clinic for hunters.  The clinic will be held at the Decatur Gun Club on Saturday and Sunday, August 17 and 18 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days. The cost of the clinic is $35 per person, which covers the cost of clay targets and refreshments. The clinic is designed to improve the wingshooting skills of hunters.  The clinic is hands-on and includes extensive live fire at a variety of clay target presentations on a specially designed sporting clays course. National Minority Donor Awareness Week

August 7th, 2019 – Secretary of State Jesse White hosted the National Minority Donor Awareness Week event “Wave Away the Waiting” to promote organ/tissue donation for multicultural communities.  “We are working together to end the wait for those in need of organ donation,” said White. “Unfortunately, minorities are in great need of organ transplants, yet they donate at a lower rate. I encourage everyone to register to become an organ/tissue donor to help give the gift of life to someone in need.” Nationally, people of color comprise 59 percent of the waiting list for organ transplants; however, this year they accounted for only 33 percent of those who donated organs, according to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network. Illinoisans can register with the Secretary of State’s Organ/Tissue Donor Registry online at LifeGoesOn.com, or by visiting their local Driver Services facility.

August 7th, 2019 – The Illinois State Fair along with Governor JB Pritzker, announced Olympic Gold Medal winner and East St. Louis native Jackie Joyner-Kersee will serve as the Grand Marshall for the Illinois State Fair Twilight Parade. The retired American track and field athlete won three gold medals and is ranked among the all-time greatest athletes in the heptathlon as well as long jump. The 2019 Illinois State Fair will open starting today through the 18th of August, with a ribbon cutting ceremony followed by the annual Twilight Parade and a free concert by Montgomery Gentry.
