Football Quickly Turns To Basketball as CAM Starts New Chapter; Plus, This Week’s Broadcast Schedule

Football Quickly Turns To Basketball as CAM Starts New Chapter; Plus, This Week’s Broadcast Schedule

DECEMBER 2  –  It was a tough Saturday for Central A&M Football (13-1), as Lena-Winslow ended the undefeated state championship dream with a 58-20 season finale in the IHSA Class 1A State Championship Game.

But for players like Connor Heaton, Jacob Paradee, Connor Hutchins, Brycen Burgener, James Paradee, and Keegan Waterman, it was actually their second varsity loss of the calendar year, for the sports currently in-season.

High School Basketball has officially tipped, but for the Raiders football players prepping to hit the hardwood, it actually won’t begin until Tuesday. And the state title football loss is the first varsity football or basketball loss of 2019, since the Class 1A State Basketball Semifinal loss to Cissna Park … and those are the only two losses of 2019.

It’ll be a short turnaround for the coverage area’s top squad of returners, which also returns Griffin Andricks and Ross Sloan into the mix. Practice begins on Tuesday, and that season opener arrives quickly, with a road game at Decatur LSA on Friday, and a home game against Argenta-Oreana on Saturday. A likely number-one seed should follow next week in the Macon County Tournament, hosted by Meridian High School, which comes with an opening round contest on Monday evening.

The season of the highest possible expectations for Raiders hoops is well deserved, after a 33-4 season in 2018-2019, which only witnessed a trio of pre-New Year’s losses … to Williamsville (the 2019 Class 3A Football Champion with an enrollment of 467), Lincoln-Way East (the Class 8A Football Champion with a private school enrollment of 2,902), and Chicago Corliss, who advanced to Class 2A State Basketball Tournament in March, finishing in fourth place.

The football season will have some final pieces over the coming months, as honors and accolades will continue to roll in, including the ESPNDecatur Real Men Wear Pink Football Awards on Sunday, January 26th at LSA High School. The awards are part of the Real Men Wear Pink celebration banquet, delivered by HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital. The top players at each position will be honored as finalists, with winners presented a trophy, courtesy of Maverik Marketing.

As for the basketball season, it’s already fully underway for many of the NowDecatur teams, which included Thanksgiving Week Tournament finishes of second place (Warrensburg-Latham), third place (MacArthur), fourth place (Cerro Gordo-Bement), and fifth place (Eisenhower), among others.

The Earthmover Credit Union Game of the Week schedule will begin next week with the semfinals and championship of the county tournament, then return in January with a game or two each week, on ESPNDecatur 1050 AM. Lee will be joined by Arius Young and Jeremy Moore for those broadcasts in 2020.

Central A&M Football Advances to State Championship Game; Bulldogs Fall Short

Central A&M Football Advances to State Championship Game; Bulldogs Fall Short

NOVEMBER 25  –  For the sixth time in program history, the Central A&M Football Team will play for a state championship.

The Raiders (12-0) used a late interception by Jacob Paradee, to hold off a charge by Athens, and tacked on a few fourth quarter scores, to defeat the Warriors, 35-21. Paradee would complete a monumental performance with a postgame flip, which included tossing a touchdown, running a touchdown, and flying-around the gridiron to gobble-up 24 tackles.

Lena-Winslow (12-0), the top-ranked team in the state, awaits Central A&M on Friday morning, when the Raiders kickoff at 10 a.m. from Northern Illinois University’s Huskie Stadium in DeKalb. The Raiders return to the championship game for the first time since 2001, and will aim to win their first 14th game since 1997. The 2001 roster included current head coach Brent Weakly, who was playing for 30-year Raiders coach, Mark Ramsey.

Ramsey is now the head coach of the St. Teresa Bulldogs, and it wasn’t quite as good of a Saturday for the Raiders Central Illinois Conference foe. The Bulldogs held a 14-7 lead after the opening quarter of their Class 2A Semifinals battle with Nashville, but the Hornets scored the game’s next four touchdowns and went on to also win, 35-21.

St. Teresa finished the season with an 11-2 record.

Bulldogs, Raiders Advance to Semifinals; Ramsey Captures Number 300

Bulldogs, Raiders Advance to Semifinals; Ramsey Captures Number 300

NOVEMBER 18  –  And then there were … still, two!

It was a great weekend for the final two NowDecatur.com coverage area high school football programs, as the St. Teresa Bulldogs and Central A&M Raiders each advanced to Saturday’s state semifinal round of the IHSA playoffs.

Coach Mark Ramsey’s Bulldogs were powered by a pair of rushing touchdowns from Denim Cook, and a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Jack Hogan, to pull away from Auburn, 34-6. St. Teresa (11-1) advanced to the Class 2A State Semifinals, and will host the Nashville Hornets (11-1), who defeated Pana on Saturday.

The victory was a monumental one for Ramsey, giving him 300 wins over a career that started in 1983 as head coach of Moweaqua High School. For 30 years Ramsey coached in Moweaqua, which eventually paired with Assumption High School to become Central A&M High School. After three seasons at Shelbyville, Ramsey became the head coach of the Bulldogs in 2016, where he has now guided St. Teresa to three state semifinal berths in his four seasons. According to IHSA.org, the 300-victory plateau places Ramsey in a three-way tie for sixth place all-time in career coaching victories, even with Providence Catholic’s Mark Senffner and Lombard Montini’s Chris Adriano, who each achieved the feat coaching exactly 38 seasons at their lone school. This is Ramsey’s 37th season. The most wins in state history feat belongs to current Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin coach, Ken Leonard. Leonard, and the Cyclones, fell to Rochester on Saturday, completing his 40th season as a head coach, with 387 wins.

Ramsey’s former player, and assistant coach, Brent Weakly, coached the Central A&M Raiders to its 12th victory of 2019, with a 42-8 smashing of the Arcola Purple Riders. The Raiders got three touchdowns from senior Jacob Paradee, and a tremendous effort defensively to shutdown Arcola, in the final home game of the year at Mark Ramsey Field. Central A&M hits the road to the Sangamo Conference third-place-finishing Athens Warriors (10-2) on Saturday in the Class 1A semis.

High School Football Quarterfinal Weekend Features NowDecatur Doubleheader

High School Football Quarterfinal Weekend Features NowDecatur Doubleheader

NOVEMBER 15  –  The final pair of NowDecatur coverage area high school football teams are back on the gridiron on Saturday afternoon, vying to reach the Final Four, one game from a trip to the State Championship game in DeKalb.

The Central A&M Raiders (11-0) kickoff at 1:30 p.m. on both WSOY 1340 AM/103.3 FM and ESPNDecatur 1050 AM. Coach Brent Weakly’s team hosts for the third-straight week of the postseason, as the Arcola Purple Riders (9-2) come to town. If the Raiders win, they are guaranteed to go on the road for the Class 1A State Semifinals, at the winner of Carrollton at Athens.

Scott Harrelson and ‘T-Mac’ Tony McClain will broadcast, starting with the Dale’s Southlake Pharmacy pregame show at 1:15 p.m. Morgan Vogels, Cassie Meyer, and Scott Chapman will start the afternoon with the extended pregame show at 1 p.m. The Raiders broadcast in its entirety on 1050 AM, but only until 2:45 p.m. when WSOY 1340 AM/103.3 FM breaks away to coverage of the afternoon’s second game.

Game two of the Earthmover Credit Union Game of the Week heads to Auburn, where the Trojans (8-3), fresh off an upset victory over Maroa-Forsyth, host the St. Teresa Bulldogs (10-1), for the 3 p.m. kick. Aric Lee and Blake Allison will have the call, as the Bulldogs battle for a Class 2A Semifinal berth, either a road game in Pana, or a home game against Nashville. Scott Chapman will be, ‘On The Road, courtesy of McLeod Express’, from the sidelines in Auburn.

With a win, Bulldogs head coach Mark Ramsey would claim his 300th career coaching victory, pulling him into a three-way tie for fifth place on the all-time list for career coaching wins. The tie would even him with Lombard Montini’s Chris Adriano and New Lenox Providence Catholic’s Matt Senffner, who each collected all 300 wins with their lone school. Ramsey began his career with Moweaqua High School, which eventually combined with Assumption High School to create Central A&M. Ramsey would guide the Indians/Raiders for the first 30 years of his career, before taking over at Shelbyville High School for three seasons, ahead of taking the reigns at St. Teresa to start the 2016 season.

For more information on these two match-ups, plus kickoff times of the extended area coverage games, see the game capsules below.

The University of Illinois rests this week, after clinching a bowl berth in East Lansing (MI) last week, but the Chicago Bears (4-5) return to prime time on Sunday night, with a road trip west to clash with the Los Angeles Rams (5-4). Pregame begins at 6:30 p.m., with kickoff slated for 7:20 p.m., on ESPNDecatur 1050 AM.

Monday Night Football features a pair of AFC West Division rivals venturing south to Mexico City. The Kansas City Chiefs (6-4) meet the Los Angeles Chargers (4-6), kicking off at 7;15 p.m., ahead of the 6:30 p.m. pregame broadcast.
