November 7, 2019 – The Decatur Federation of Teaching Assistants and the Decatur School Board may be headed back to the table before the end of the month. According to DPS, a mediation session has been tentatively scheduled for November 21st. Negotiations have been taking place between the Union representing the teaching assistants and the Board. On October 29th, the DFTA began a strike that was suspended after 3 days when the TA’s insurance was suspended due to lack of hours worked. The cost of that health insurance has remained the sticking point in the negotiations. The DFTA represents 275 employees that serve as assistants, interpreters, nurses, and hearing-vision technicians. Over half serve special needs students, who were kept out of class during the 3 day strike.
