January 11 – Anticipating heavy snowfall starting Friday night, Macon County Engineer Bruce Bird says crews will begin plowing early Saturday morning and will keep working until roads are open and passable.
Bird says the Highway Department divides the county into quadrants for its crews. Since it is responsible for just main roads in the rural areas, all of them carry the same priority with the exception of roads close to Decatur such as Brush College Road and Lost Bridge Road.
Motorists who get stranded in rural areas and are unable to get family, friends or a towing service to get them out should contact local authorities. Often, either local volunteer fire departments or sheriff’s deputies will be dispatched to determine a course of action.
Anyone stranded in areas with drifting snow should stay in their vehicles until help arrives, as wandering on roadways during low visibility is highly dangerous.
