January 5 – Millikin University’s Martin Atkins will offer an opportunity for the Decatur community to get an insight into the business of music with three days of master classes this week.
Atkins, a producer, label owner, author, entrepreneur and drummer with 40 years of experience in the music industry, has shared his expertise as Millikin’s coordinator of music business since fall of 2017.
The three-day series runs Wednesday through Friday with Atkins and guest speakers taking classes to various Decatur locations, such as BLDD Architects and Blue Brew, Millikin’s student-run coffee shop.
Atkins’ experience in the music business spans many genres, borders and industries. His participation in almost all aspects of record production and promotion has given him a unique perspective not only on where the music industry and where it is headed.
Classes will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., covering topics such as merchandising, marketing, packaging, distribution, touring, and ticketing strategies. Afternoon sessions at various Decatur locations will address copyright basics, making extra money and crowd funding.
Atkins worked with such bands as Public Image Ltd., Killing Joke, Ministry and Nine Inch Nails. He began working on the business side of music in 1988 when he formed Invisible Records and then Mattress Factory Studios in 1996.
Early bird tickets for all three days of master classes are $299 and one day tickets are available for $125. For more information, email firstname.lastname@example.org or visit the event website.
