April 21 – Soccer players have taken over the city of Decatur with the 9th annual MidState Cup.
The annual tournament started on Friday, April 20 and will run through Sunday, April 22. Colin Bonner, MidState Director of Coaching, said they hit a record number of 142 teams participating in the tournament with 18 of those being part of the MidState program. These teams come from all around Illinois, Missouri, and Indiana. There are 15 soccer fields for the teams to play on between the fields at Stephen Decatur Middle School, Millikin, and Maroa.
Bonner said they have more teams this year than in years past because of the quality of the tournament. “I think we put on a fantastic tournament. I think our volunteers are always getting complimented. We have over 150 volunteers to help you. We also have fantastic fields because the park district maintains them really well.’ He continued to say there are other things that set them apart from other tournaments like they give MVP cards to coaches to hand out to the players, which Bonner said it always a hit.
MidState Soccer Club welcomes players ages 7-19. In addition to their tournament, the players get to experience great competition within Illinois along with facing teams from the Midwest. MidState coaching staff works with their players to help them reach their full potential as soccer players through structured, high quality training that instills a love of the game.
