DECATUR — DPS-61 students are learning the basics of taekwondo thanks to an after school program held at Stephen Decatur Middle School.
Students across the district are able to take martial arts lessons at nearly no cost to them. Instructor Ben West says all they have to purchase is the uniform.
“Taking martial arts on a regular basis is pretty expensive,” West says. “Having it after school gives the kids a chance to participate in a sport that is a little more unconventional, and it gives them some life skills.”
After school karate meets every day, M-F from around 3:45-4:30 p.m. West says the students meet, gear up, and stretch before getting into the lesson for the day. Instructors teach basic skills along with discipline, which West says is good for both at school and at home. One of the younger students, Michael says more students should be involved.
“I love this program because it is a great place,” Michael says. “I think it is where everyone should be!”
