MT. ZION – A traditional barber shop with an old-time feel, Don’s has been in its Mt. Zion location since 1980.
Don’s Barber Shop was founded by Donald Merideth after years of service in the military, where he spent some time cutting the soldiers’ hair. In 2013, Don retired, and shifted the business to his pupil, Barry Altevogt.
“He taught me for a while before I went to barber college,” says Altevogt. “I got to work with him for three years, and when he decided to retire, I bought the business from him. I really just try to keep his traditions alive, and so far it’s been successful for me.”
Traditions that include a neck shave with a razor, back massages with a handheld machine, and something unique to Don’s – a vacuum system attached to the clippers.
“The vacuum system was always a big thing here,” says Merideth. “A guy comes in and gets hair all over him and he has to brush it all off when he gets home. This way he gets out cleaner and it’s easier on us because we don’t have to clean up the hair as much.”
Altevogt says he thinks they have been a popular shop for so long because they of how they treat their customers.
“I think the old time atmosphere brings people back along with the quality of work,” he says. “The best part of being a barber is meeting people. A lot of them become good friends and some feel even like your family.”
Don’s Barber Shop is located at 110 North Drive in Mt. Zion.
