MT. ZION – After eighteen months of construction, Mt. Zion High School is happy to finally reveal their 50,000 square foot fieldhouse and 1,500 seat auditorium.
The high school hosted an open house Monday night showcasing their brand-new facility. On the athletic side, the fieldhouse holds a full, 200 meter track, and four courts designed for multiple sports. As for the auditorium, it is state-of-the-art with a capacity of 2,000 standing room only. Principal Kraig Garber says he is glad it is finally open.
“I never thought we would get this much response from the community, but I’m definitely excited about it finally being done,” says Garber.
The fieldhouse and auditorium were part of the school’s $20 million renovation project. The first phase was adding the turf fields, which have already been used for 2 full seasons. Garber says they needed the new facility for several reasons.
“The new auditorium will be great for our national show choir event during the winter, as well as all of our fine arts programs,” he says. “We are also going to use the fieldhouse for all of our sports and it will be very beneficial for P.E. classes.”
Garber says they will also open the facility to the public, too.
“The fieldhouse will be open to the community at various times,” Garber says. “I think we will have it open every morning 5:30-6:30, and, depending on events, it will be open various evenings and nights.”
While all of the major construction is done, Garber says they have a few more “punch-list” items still to cover. The fieldhouse and auditorium is attached to the high school, and located just across from the football field.
“This is great for all of our student programs and I feel this will benefit Mt. Zion students and the community for years to come.”
