DECATUR– Ameren Illinois is expanding their footprint in Decatur with their latest groundbreaking.
The energy company began the development process of a new Gas Control Center, which will work to regulate natural gas to their nearly 80,000 Illinois customers.
“This is a state-of-the-art facility and it will serve as an important link in our efforts to monitor and control the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to all of our customers across the state,” Ameren Illinois President Richard Mark said.
The 12,100 square foot facility will be located at 2425 N. Woodford Street on the north end of town. Mark said the location was an important factor when choosing to return to Decatur, “We see this as vitally important to our operations so the fact that we are so close to our current location was important. Being so close will allow our electric operations and gas operations to work hand in hand and provide any extra resources they may need.”
The facility will be maintained by at least 20 full time employees, which Marks says will be hired new.
Economic Development Corporation President Ryan McCrady said the 20 full time jobs are a big plus, but the development will have a much larger impact overall, “$5.3 million will support a number of temporary construction jobs, 20 full time jobs, and it also helps us diversify our workforce and allow Decatur to remain viable and offer more options to job seekers.”
Mark says he expects construction to begin soon and to wrap up by May of next year.
