DECATUR– Decatur’s business community has been a hive of activity lately with the development and opening of many new retail businesses but on Thursday it received its biggest jolt in a long time.
Back in August, Convey Health Solutions announced its intention to develop a costumer service center in the Fairview Plaza shopping center and on Thursday morning the company cut the ribbon on their new location.
“We chose Decatur because of the development tools that were made available to us like the City of Decatur and the Economic Development Corporation,” Convey Executive Vice President Jonathan Starr said. “It is extremely important to us to move to a community that is willing to work with us, and partner with us, to move our corporation forward.”
In August the company said they wanted to hire 300 to 350 employees from the Decatur area and as of Thursday, Starr says they are right on track, “We had several hundred people turn out to our job fair a couple of months ago at the local college and the job pool that we had to choose from was very willing and very motivated.”
The call center moved into the former Star Tec space occupying several thousand square feet on the northernmost corner of the shopping center.
The building that Convey now occupies laid empty for several years following the closure of Star Tec, “This is great for us because it is redeveloping space, it is space that we already had and that was easily convertible to what this company needed,” EDC President Ryan McCrady said.
“We always say business development breeds further business development and we expect that to hold true here,” McCrady said. “It’s always a good feeling to bring in a new company while also filling an empty building… it’s just a good day.”
