DECATUR –This weekend marks the 10th and final year for the Betsy Smith Memorial 5K Run/Walk along the shores of Lake Decatur.
The race honors Betsy Smith, daughter of Dr. Dan and Jeanie Smith, who passed away on April 26, 2006, just a few weeks prior to her graduation from Taylor University in Indiana. Race Director Theresa Miller says Betsy’s passion was people.
“Betsy was just one of those girls that had a presence that everyone remembered,” says Miller. “Everyone loved her, and she had a passion for getting to know people.”
Miller says they have 192 people registered, but expect to see over 250 participants with some last minute registration. She says this will be the final year for the run as Betsy’s family has decided that they are ready to stop doing the runs.
Miller says the entry fee is $20, and those who pre-register will get a t-shirt and snacks will be provided from Del’s Popcorn Shop. She says there is still time to sign up for the run/walk, and encourages you to donate to a great cause.
“The course is great as it is right on beautiful Lake Decatur,” she says. “It is also a fairly flat course, and families love to come, so it is a great atmosphere.”
All of the proceeds in this final year will go to a ministry that Betsy was involved in called REALIFE located in Indiana. In previous years, some of the race proceeds were given to several Decatur charities.
Miller believes this will be an emotional year, considering it is their last time they will hold the race. She says they are currently at $122,900 raised, but hope to reach the $130,000 mark by race day.
Check-in time on Saturday, September 26 is from 7 to 7:45 AM on race day and you can still register on the day of the race. The race will start and end at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital.
